After years of working in our libraries on our own, it was the librarian of Belgium, Guido Cooreman, who wrote to the Western European countries to sound out the possibilities for more cooperation. And also to see how other libraries were organised, in order to learn from each other. Few responded, but since March 1997 the cooperation between the National Libraries in Belgium, France and the Netherlands started. Guido Cooreman from Belgium and Marije Fienieg from the Netherlands are professional librarians. Parivash Ardei started working with much zeal in the French library. We visited each other's libraries and made plans for cooperation. This concerns making a thesaurus in Dutch and in French for Baha'i headings, choosing a classification system and computer system, exchanging missing items and files etc. The computer sytem we adopted is the ISIS database for libraries, which UNESCO offers for free to non-commercial organisations.
In the Netherlands we could make some progress in making Baha'i literature accessible to Dutch citizens. We succeeded in gaining the interest of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (Royal Library), which is responsible for the Dutch Central Catalogue. Normally it is quite expensive to have your catalogue filed in the Central Catalogue, but one telephone call was sufficient to raise their interest. The collection of Baha'i books was considered to be a unique collection in the Netherlands and it won't cost us anything. So in future, all libraries which are online with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, will be able to find a lot of Baha'i books and not only the (mostly) old books which university-libraries possess (some of them being from covenant-breakers). The Koninklijke Bibliotheek also has a home page on the Internet. Libraries and also individuals who are members of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek can borrow the books from our National Baha'i Library by mail-order.
For information, advice etc., you can contact Marije Fienieg: address: National Baha'i Library, Riouwstraat 27, 2585 GR The Hague, Netherlands tel/fax: 00-31-76-5422336 (home) e-mail: email@example.com
Recently, the editor received an electronic mail message from Green Acre Bahá'í School. Green Acre was blessed in 1912 by a visit from the Master, during which He predicted that some day, this area would be the site of a great university, welcoming students from all over the world. This university would be located on Monsalvat, along with the second Mashriqu'l-Adhkar of the United States.
In the hopes of getting a bit closer to the realization of this vision, Green Acre asked the my help in beginning to come up with goals, objectives and guidelines that could enable Green Acre to develop its current library along the lines of a research center, focussing especially on Green Acre's mission as "an historic international Baha'i Center of learning, inspired by the presence and example of 'Abdu'l-Baha, which fosters spiritual transformation, promotes the oneness of humankind, world peace, race unity and the equality of women and men." Green Acre also asked for suggestions as to equipment, software and human resource needs that could help achieve this end.
I have offered to assist in this effort. Pending response from Green Acre, I am asking that those who may have some interest in being on a task force to let me know of their interest and experience. If any of you have suggestions of equipment, software, and available human resources (volunteer librarians, etc. who could assist at Green Acre's library), please contact the editor. Contact information is at the end of this issue.
